Cost-of-living protests spark increased tensions in Martinique

todaySeptember 24, 2024 28

Background

A curfew on the French Caribbean island of Martinique has been extended until Thursday following urban violence linked to cost-of-living protests. A once-banned squadron of elite riot police has also been sent to the island. Ross Cullen reports.

RFI reports that some protests have turned violent, with looters targeting supermarkets and restaurants. So far, 11 police officers have been injured by firearms, and three protesters have been wounded, one of them shot. France has meanwhile sent a group of special anti-riot police that’s been banned for 65 years to the French Caribbean island of Martinique, where protesters have gathered despite the government barring demonstrations in parts of the island.
