9 October 2024 Morning Biz News: Strategic Acquisitions and Financial Shifts Shape Southern Africa’s Economic Landscape”

today9 October, 2024

Background

In a significant development within the Namibian economy, French waste management firm Séché Environnement has acquired 100% of Rent-A-Drum, aiming to enhance its product offerings and solidify its presence in Southern Africa. This strategic move highlights the region’s economic potential and increasing environmental regulations, setting the stage for a more robust waste management landscape.

In the financial sector, Standard Bank S.A has reported an impressive tenfold increase in instant payments, largely attributed to the growing adoption of the digital payments platform PayShap. Launched in March 2023 by BankservAfrica and the Payments Association of South Africa, PayShap enables consumers to make instant payments using their cellphone numbers, providing affordable access across participating banks.

Meanwhile, Norway’s Equinor remains committed to its $42 billion liquefied natural gas project in Tanzania, despite facing delays due to proposed changes to a financial agreement. A senior company executive has indicated that negotiations for this mega gas project have stalled following government modifications, highlighting the complexities of international energy investments.

On the currency front, the U.S. dollar has remained stable, offering relief to the yen and other major currencies after its recent rise to a seven-week high. Investors are pausing to evaluate the U.S. interest rate outlook. In contrast, the New Zealand dollar has fallen to $0.6096, its lowest level since August 19, following a 50 basis point interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Latest Financial Indicators

  • Namibia Dollar (NAD):
    • 17.59 to the US$

  • Brent Crude: $80.93 per barrel
  • Bitcoin: $1,103,449.96
