INTERVIEW: Herbert Jauch Calls for Equitable Distribution of Namibia’s Natural Resources

Herbert Jauch, a well-known Namibian labor researcher and social justice advocate, recently addressed the critical issue of natural resource management, emphasizing the need for all Namibians to benefit equitably from the country’s wealth. Speaking ahead of the upcoming elections, Jauch argued that while the principle of resource sharing is widely accepted, it remains largely theoretical unless concrete steps are taken to ensure that Namibia’s natural wealth genuinely benefits the majority.

Jauch pointed out that conservancies, often cited as examples of community benefit-sharing, do not encompass some of the most lucrative sectors such as mining and fishing. These industries, he noted, have historically contributed little to the broader population, instead enriching a small elite class, often connected to foreign interests. According to him, only a select few Namibians with ties to these sectors have profited, leaving the majority without significant benefit from the country’s vast natural wealth.

To remedy this, Jauch suggested that revenue from mining and fishing must be “socialized,” ensuring that society as a whole reaps the rewards. He proposed allocating a substantial portion of these proceeds to the country’s sovereign wealth fund, which could then finance initiatives like a universal basic income grant. This approach, Jauch explained, would guarantee that every Namibian receives a direct share of the country’s natural resources.

As election season approaches, Jauch urged citizens to hold politicians accountable for their promises regarding natural resources. He emphasized the need for candidates to offer specific plans on how they will implement policies that address inequality in resource distribution. Without these concrete measures, Jauch warned, the idea that all Namibians should benefit from the country’s resources risks becoming an empty slogan.

In conclusion, Jauch called for the tangible, visible distribution of benefits from Namibia’s natural resources, ensuring that these valuable assets truly uplift all citizens, not just a privileged few.
