today18 October, 2024

Background

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says investigations into the funds uncovered at the Phala Phala farm in Limpopo have concluded, with independent bodies finding no wrongdoing on his part. In his reply to the National Assembly’s oral questions, he highlighted that the National Assembly decided not to pursue the independent panel’s report for further inquiry. Ramaphosa expressed his full cooperation during the investigations and is confident in the upcoming Constitutional Court review on 26 November:

In the meantime, MK Party parliamentary leader John Hlophe has condemned the National Prosecuting Authority’s choice not to pursue charges in the Phala Phala case. Former spy chief Arthur Fraser had accused President Ramaphosa and former presidential protection head Wally Rhoode of covering up the 2020 theft of foreign currency from Ramaphosa’s Limpopo game farm. Hlophe argues that the NPA’s decision reflects a justice system in South Africa that favors the elite
