11 Million internally displaced in Sudan

Rising violence and new atrocities in Sudan have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with over 11 million people displaced amid reports of mass killings and widespread sexual violence, according to UN officials.

“The situation in Sudan is catastrophic; there’s no other way to describe it. Hunger, disease, and sexual violence are rampant. For the people of Sudan, this is a living nightmare,” warned Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Since the conflict began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), 11 million people have been displaced within Sudan, and more than 3.1 million have fled the country after over 18 months of war, IOM reported on Tuesday.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Monday the people of Sudan are trapped in a “nightmare of violence, hunger, disease and displacement”, as the brutal war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to rage.
