In response to recent allegations regarding the Usakos Town Council, Mayor Irene Simeon-Kurtz spoke out to clarify misconceptions and defend the council’s actions. During an interview, she expressed her disappointment with the Namibian newspaper, claiming that its reporting has been misleading and unfair. Simeon-Kurtz emphasized that the town is indeed developing and that the council has maintained transparency in its operations.

The mayor outlined several ongoing initiatives aimed at improving the community, including the installation of water supplies in informal settlements, specifically in Saamstaan and Ongulumbashe, and the operation of two additional boreholes to provide water for residents. Additionally, she highlighted the completion of a fenced youth sports field and community hall, which is now set for further upgrades through a tender process led by the Ministry of Youth.

Moreover, the mayor shared that the council has successfully sent 66 local youths to vocational training at no cost, with 16 of them now employed. She noted recent approval for the construction of two bridges, enhancing access to key areas such as Hakhaseb and the hospital road.

Addressing the claims made by certain community members, including Belinda Koses, who was quoted in the article, Simeon-Kurtz stated that Koses had recently expressed satisfaction with the council’s efforts. She suggested that the negativity stemmed from personal grievances related to employment within the council, urging the media to verify information before publishing.

The mayor also tackled the issue of the local bank’s closure, clarifying that it was a decision made by the bank itself and not the council. She pointed out that banks, including FNB, have been closing branches across various locations, and the Usakos council is not responsible for these commercial decisions. Simeon-Kurtz mentioned that the council is in discussions with other banks to explore the possibility of establishing a smaller branch or agency in Usakos, underscoring the council’s commitment to facilitating investment and economic growth.

In conclusion, Mayor Irene Simeon-Kurtz reaffirmed the Usakos Town Council’s dedication to community development and transparency, encouraging residents to focus on the tangible progress being made rather than unfounded allegations.
