In an exclusive interview with Crispin Mubebo, the Deputy Commissioner and Acting Regional Commander of the Namibian Police, he shed light on the ongoing efforts to ensure public safety, particularly with the festive season and the upcoming elections around the corner.

Ongoing Safety Operations

Mubebo explained that the operation recently seen in Windhoek, where civil workers conducted rounds to ensure proper licensing and maintain law and order at public venues like bars, is part of a broader strategy to ensure safety. He emphasized the importance of these operations, noting the fast-approaching presidential and national assembly elections, as well as the holiday season, both of which traditionally see an increase in public gatherings.

“We began these operations earlier, with the goal of ensuring that our residents are safe during the festive season and election periods. Our focus is to prevent crimes such as theft, assaults, and vandalism, which typically surge during this time,” Mubebo said.

He further explained that the police are taking a proactive stance, starting operations well in advance to secure public spaces and promote a safe environment for citizens.

Public Safety Tips for the Season

Mubebo also issued several key safety reminders for the public. He warned against leaving valuable items unattended in vehicles, a common opportunity for theft. He recommended that individuals keep their valuables at home or in safe, locked compartments and avoid leaving them visible in vehicles when unattended.

“Make sure someone is at home to watch your property, or contact the authorities, such as the police or city police, if you’re going to be away for an extended period. This ensures we can provide increased surveillance in your area,” Mubebo advised.

In addition to protecting property, Mubebo urged the public to refrain from carrying dangerous weapons to public gatherings, such as knives, firearms, or machetes. He highlighted that the presence of these weapons could escalate tensions, especially in social settings where alcohol or other substances might be involved.

“We discourage the carrying of dangerous weapons in public spaces, as they make others feel unsafe and can lead to violence. If anyone is found carrying such items, we will confiscate them to ensure public safety,” he stated.

Crime Trends and Law Enforcement Capacity

When asked about the current crime trends, Mubebo noted a slight increase in certain crime categories, such as housebreaking and assaults, as the festive season approaches. However, he reassured the public that while crime fluctuates during this time of year, the police force is prepared to handle these challenges.

“We are aware of the seasonal uptick in crimes like assault and theft, especially in areas where gatherings and alcohol consumption are involved. However, we are fully committed to ensuring that the public feels secure,” Mubebo said.

Regarding the police force’s ability to handle the rising demands, he confirmed that law enforcement is fully equipped to tackle the challenges, with ongoing support from city and security police in addition to the regional police efforts.

Conclusion

As the festive season and elections approach, public safety remains a top priority. With proactive measures in place and a heightened focus on crime prevention, Mubebo and the Namibian Police are working tirelessly to create a secure environment for all. Public cooperation and awareness will be essential to ensure a safe and peaceful end to the year.
