Karibib Town Mayor Davey Van Wyk recently shared insights into his re-election, the town’s ongoing development projects, and plans for the future during a conversation about the town’s evolving infrastructure and community needs.

Re-election and Leadership Vision

Mayor Van Wyk expressed his humility and gratitude after being re-elected as the leader of the Karibib Town Council for a second term. “I’m deeply honored that my fellow councillors have entrusted me with this role again,” he said. “This trust motivates me to continue working hard for the community and ensuring that the town progresses.”

Under his leadership, Karibib has made significant strides, with approximately 60 to 70 percent of the projects set out in the council’s first year already completed. The focus now is on completing the remaining projects to ensure the council delivers on its promises.

Key Projects Underway

The town of Karibib is on the cusp of significant growth, and several important projects are currently in the pipeline. One of the most anticipated developments is the installation of traffic lights—referred to as “robots” in the local vernacular—which will soon be operational in the town. “The first robots in Karibib will be commissioned in the next two weeks,” Mayor Van Wyk confirmed. “This will help manage traffic congestion and make the town more organized as it grows.”

Another major development is the construction of a medical center, thanks to a generous donation from Navaha Gold Mine, in collaboration with the council. “This facility will help address the health needs of our people by providing services that were previously only available in Ousakos,” he said. The groundbreaking for this hospital is set to take place, pending final approval from the Ministry of Health.

Preparing for Growth and Employment Opportunities

As Karibib continues to grow, particularly with new mining ventures such as Osino Mine, which will be operational in the coming year, the town is preparing for an influx of people. The mayor highlighted that preparations are underway to improve the town’s infrastructure, including sewage, water, and electricity services, to accommodate the growing population.

Local economic development, especially in terms of youth employment, is a priority. The town council is actively working with mining companies to ensure that local youth are considered for job opportunities. “We want to ensure that our young people are trained and have the skills needed to take advantage of the employment opportunities that come with the growth of the mining sector,” Van Wyk emphasized.

The council has also created a database of young job seekers, ensuring that they are prioritized when employment opportunities arise. Furthermore, the town council is working on establishing a vocational training center that will offer short-term skill development courses for the youth, aiming for the first intake in 2026.

Plans for SME Development

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the economic growth of any community, and Karibib is no exception. Mayor Van Wyk mentioned plans to build a dedicated SME Park in the town, although the council is still in the consultation phase with the local community to ensure it is located in the most strategic area. “We’ve identified a potential site, and we’re negotiating with TransNamib for the land,” he explained. The development of an SME Park is part of a broader strategy to stimulate local business activity and reduce unemployment in the town.

Looking Ahead

Mayor Van Wyk remains optimistic about the future of Karibib, with plans to transform it into a thriving municipality. “Karibib is growing fast, and we are committed to ensuring that we have the right infrastructure and services in place to support this growth,” he said.

With his focus on completing current projects, creating employment opportunities for the youth, and ensuring sustainable economic growth, Mayor Van Wyk’s leadership is shaping the future of Karibib into one that promises prosperity and development for all its residents.
