Nam Elections 2024

INTERVIEW: Herbert Jauch on the Latest Election Rallies

today25 November, 2024

Background

As Namibia approaches its crucial election, political rallies have taken center stage, with parties across the spectrum trying to mobilize voters. Activist Herbert Jauch weighed in on the recent wave of rallies held by political parties ranging from SWANU to SWAPO and the official opposition, PDM. According to Jauch, the rallies reflect a growing urgency, especially among the major parties, to make significant promises and engage the youth.

He pointed out that the focus has shifted towards mobilizing young voters, especially considering that a majority of this year’s electorate is under 35. This demographic, Jauch argues, could dramatically influence the outcome of the election. The ruling party and opposition alike are intensifying their messaging in a bid to ensure these young voters turn out in full force. While Jauch acknowledged that promises from the ruling party may not differ much from the past, he stressed that the heat has increased, and both sides are pushing hard to secure the youth vote.

Jauch also discussed the challenges political parties face in connecting with young voters, especially in light of high unemployment rates and frustration among the youth. He emphasized that merely promising jobs and housing is not enough. Political parties need to show a concrete plan and demonstrate that they are genuinely willing to open their structures to younger generations.

“The exclusion of young people is so widespread and real that it will take more than speeches to convince them,” Jauch concluded. He believes the real test for these elections lies not in the political promises, but in how effectively the youth feel engaged and represented. As Namibia heads to the polls, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will shape the future of the country’s democracy.
