NamWater secures funds for climate-resilient water systems

today3 December, 2024

Background

The Namibia Water Corporation has secured N$249 million in funding for the Ohangwena Aquifer, upgraded water systems, and technical support. The national water utility announced on Monday that the funding includes N$192 million for a climate-resilient water supply and N$57 million for energy-efficient systems, solar power, and staff training.

This significant investment follows the signing of three grant agreements between Germany and Namibia, valued at a total of €20 million (approximately N$ 383 million). The agreements support vital projects in water infrastructure and urban development. Specifically, the funds will go toward the Ohangwena Aquifer Climate Resilient Water Supply Project, technical assistance for NamWater, and the creation of an Urban Development Fund to help upgrade informal settlements.

NamWater spokesperson, Lot Ndamanomhata elaborates on the grant.

These initiatives are designed to tackle pressing issues such as water scarcity, improve living conditions in underserved areas, and strengthen the economic prospects of low-income communities. This partnership is a continuation of Germany’s long-standing development cooperation with Namibia, which has now reached €1.6 billion since 1990.
