A 60-year-old Namibian woman was arrested at the Ariamsvlei Border Post on Monday night, 13 January 2025, after she was caught attempting to smuggle drugs into the country. The woman, who had entered Namibia from South Africa, was found with six parcels of suspected crystal meth, concealed on her body and in her luggage.

Border officials grew suspicious of the woman and conducted a search, which led to the discovery of two parcels of an unknown substance. Upon further investigation, with the assistance of officials from the Namibia Revenue Authority (NamRa), four additional parcels were found hidden on her person.

The six parcels of suspected crystal meth weighed a total of 2,635 grams, with an estimated street value of N$1,317,500. Drug Law Enforcement officers were immediately called to the scene, and the woman was arrested on charges of contravening the Drugs Act, specifically Section 2(c) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 41/1971, related to the dealing in prohibited substances.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, at the Karasburg Magistrate Court. The investigation is ongoing.

The arrest raises serious concerns regarding the increasing prevalence of drug trafficking in Namibia, including involvement from individuals who may be seen as mentors or community role models. Authorities have stressed that drug-related offenses, whether in small or large quantities, remain a major issue in the country, and the involvement of older individuals in such activities is particularly troubling.

Police continue to urge vigilance and cooperation from the public to curb the growing threat of drug trafficking.
