Only 244 learners scored an A* in English as a second language in the Namibia Senior Certificate Ordinary (NSCCO)  2024 national examinations.
Education minister Anna Nghipondoka raised concern over the decline in the performance in both Afrikaans and English as second languages.
The minister said both subjects saw a decrease in the A* to D average, with the national average dropping from 70.2% to 58.9% in 2024.
 The results showed that out of 40 757 full-time candidates, only 8.3% or 3 382 learners, scored an A, while 19.9% (8110) received a  B.
However, a larger proportion, 34.5% or 14 061 learners, scored a C, while  61.5% or 25 065 scored a D.
The results also showed that 1 222 learners were ungraded in English.
The minister said these grades emphasize the need for targeted efforts to enhance language skills and achieve better results in these critical areas.
“ Encouraging learners to read extensively, participate in debates, and practice writing consistently can help strengthen their vocabulary, comprehension, and expression,” said the minister.
University of Namibia professor Jairos Kangira called for comprehensive training of English teachers to equip them with the necessary skills to teach the language effectively.  Kangira advocates for establishing additional libraries countrywide to foster a reading culture.
He also urged parents to invest in books for their children to encourage reading at home.
