Nigerian Environmentalists Oppose Oil Production Resumption in Ogoniland

today22 January, 2025

Background

Reuters says environmentalists in Nigeria on Tuesday criticized the government’s plan to restart oil production in Ogoniland, calling for a suspension until thorough discussions with local communities are held. Ogoniland, located in the oil-rich Niger River delta’s Rivers state, has been a hotspot for pollution. A $1 billion cleanup effort began in 2018, following a 2011 UN Environmental Programme study.
