Proposal for New Regions Rejected in Favor of Boundary Adjustments and New Constituencies

today22 January, 2025

Background

The Delimitation and Demarcation Commission, chaired by acting judge Petrus Unengu, has rejected proposals for creating new regions. Instead, they will implement 7 regional boundary adjustments, 10 new constituencies, and 61 constituency boundary changes. Two constituencies will also be renamed. Despite proposals to divide Oshikoto, Ohangwena, and Otjozondjupa regions, the commission decided to keep them intact, citing trends in other Southern African countries with fewer regions. Unengu highlighted that countries like Nigeria and Saudi Arabia manage larger populations with fewer provinces
