February 4 marks the first anniversary of President Hage Geingob’s death.
NewsonOne spoke to National Assembly Speaker Peter Katjavivi about his memories of the late leader.
Katjavivi, set to retire from active politics this year, described Geingob as an extraordinary person—gifted, skilful, and, above all, caring.
He shared that Geingob was part of his generation, one of the young leaders who shaped Namibia’s history.
Katjavivi emphasised Geingob’s remarkable leadership qualities and his visionary approach to governance. Katjivavi said Geingob ensured the drafting committee of the Namibian Constitution included representatives from all political parties.
“He was able to reach out to everyone to make sure everyone felt their presence there was needed… His vision for Namibia…talk about the three organs of state working together, but also the systems, the rules, that govern this country, they need to utilise them in a manner that also inspire confidence, it was always part of his vision he expounded,” remarked Katjavivi.
Katjavivi reflected on how the nation honoured Geingob’s vision by ensuring a smooth leadership transition, which solidified his lasting legacy after his passing.
“I think the biggest tribute that we paid to him was to manage the transition after his passing.”
