A poll conducted by Verian and commissioned by Danish newspaper Berlingske and Greenland’s Sermitsiaq publication found that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the US. Only 6% expressed a preference for US affiliation, while 9% remained undecided.
The survey, published on Tuesday, challenges former US President Donald Trump’s assertion that Greenland is eager to join the United States. Trump previously made headlines in 2019 when he suggested that the US could purchase Greenland, a proposal that was swiftly dismissed by both Greenlandic and Danish officials.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has increasing strategic importance due to its Arctic location and natural resources. While there have been discussions about greater self-governance, the poll indicates that Greenlanders overwhelmingly favor remaining within the Danish realm.
