The UN Human Rights Council meeting on the human rights situation in Ukraine

The White House has issued new executive orders that will further affect the cooperative and multilateral operations of the United Nations. These moves come just two weeks after the United States declared its withdrawal from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

US withdraws from UN Agencies

President Trump’s directive, issued on Tuesday, confirms that the United States will cease participation in and financial support for the Human Rights Council in Geneva, which is set to meet to discuss the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Additionally, the order mandates a review of US membership in UNESCO, the UN’s agency for education, science, and culture, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Funding cut for UNRWA amid allegations

The new order also impacts the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides assistance to Palestinian refugees. The White House has claimed that UNRWA has been infiltrated by terrorist affiliates, leading to the withdrawal of US funding. UNRWA has denied these allegations and initiated both internal and external investigations, resulting in the dismissal of nine staff members.

US review of global engagements

In a further move, the executive order calls for a review of the US’s involvement in all international intergovernmental organizations, treaties, and conventions by August 2025.

UN acknowledges US contribution

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric acknowledged that US support for the UN has been vital in saving lives and promoting global security. He noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is eager to continue productive discussions with President Trump regarding the UN’s potential in tackling global challenges.
