African Leaders Push for Reparations Despite Resistance

today14 February, 2025

Background

African leaders gathering in Ethiopia this weekend will renew calls for slavery and colonial reparations, though they are likely to face resistance from former colonial powers that have largely dismissed such demands. Reuters has it that while the global conversation on reparations has gained traction, opposition has also intensified. U.S. President Donald Trump has stated he does not foresee reparations happening, and many European leaders have rejected discussions on the matter.
