Dr. Simasiku Mutumba, a respected academic, has shared his reflections on the late Dr. Sam Nujoma’s legacy at the University of Namibia (UNAM), ahead of the memorial service set for February 23, 2025, in the Zambezi region.

Dr. Mutumba, who first met Dr. Nujoma in 1992 at UNAM’s inaugural graduation ceremony, described the founding president as a visionary leader committed to the advancement of education in Namibia. “As UNAM’s first chancellor, Dr. Nujoma played a critical role in ensuring that students had access to scholarships and funding opportunities,” he noted.

After joining UNAM as a senior academic in 2006, Dr. Mutumba continued working under Dr. Nujoma’s leadership. He emphasized the former president’s influence in shaping policies that improved student welfare and academic excellence. “Dr. Nujoma not only represented the university at major forums but also fostered a strong relationship with university management and staff,” he added.

Beyond his academic contributions, Dr. Nujoma was known for his charismatic and selfless nature. According to Dr. Mutumba, the late leader had a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. “He was courageous yet kind, fearless yet compassionate,” he said.

The upcoming memorial service in the Zambezi region will be an opportunity for people to share their personal experiences with Dr. Nujoma and reflect on his enduring legacy. Dr. Mutumba confirmed that he will be attending and delivering a statement at the event.
