WHO Investigates Mysterious Illness in DR Congo

Reuters reports indicate that the World Health Organization is investigating two outbreaks of an unknown illness in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo, which have resulted in over 50 deaths in recent weeks. As of February 16, there have been 431 reported cases and 53 fatalities in remote villages across two health zones in Equateur province, according to a WHO bulletin.

The nation awaits the Supreme Court’s verdict on last year’s contested presidential election results. The Independent Patriots for Change and the Landless People’s Movement have challenged the outcome, alleging irregularities in the November election won by Swapo candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
