Somalia Faces Rising Hunger Crisis Amid Forecasted Drought

today5 March, 2025

Background

The World Food Programme warns that an additional one million people in Somalia could experience crisis-level hunger in the coming months due to an expected drought during the next crop cycle. And according to Reuters, Jean-Martin Bauer, director of WFP’s Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Service, cautioned that the situation could worsen due to funding cuts. In 2022, the Horn of Africa endured its worst drought in over 40 years following consecutive failed rainy seasons.
