By: Hertha Ekandjo The European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation have committed N$230 million (€12 million) to implement the Blue Benguela Current Action programme, a regional initiative to strengthen ocean governance and sustainability in Southern Africa. The programme, officially launched on Wednesday, seeks to enhance cross-border cooperation for the sustainable management of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME). The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) will implement the project. According to a joint statement from the EU and its project partners, the Benguela Current is one of the world’s most productive marine ecosystems, supporting food security, employment, and economic opportunities for millions across Angola, Namibia, and South Africa. “Sustainable fisheries, marine spatial planning, and ecosystem-based conservation efforts are essential for preserving biodiversity while fostering economic growth in coastal communities dependent on fisheries, aquaculture, and eco-tourism,” the statement read. The project aims to bolster regional ocean governance, promote sustainable economic opportunities, and build climate resilience across the three participating nations.
