Oranjemund authorities warn residents to avoid Orange River

today7 May, 2025

Background

The Oranjemund Town Council has issued a warning to residents, advising them to steer clear of the Orange River due to rapidly rising water levels and strong currents, which have rendered the river unsafe for swimming.

In a statement, the council said that the heightened water levels pose significant risks, particularly to those attempting to swim or cross the river.

“Residents are strongly urged to avoid the Orange River until further notice. Road users are also advised to respect road closures and avoid flooded areas,” the statement read.

The Roads Authority has reinforced the warning, with spokesperson Hileni Fillemon providing an update on the situation. Authorities are closely monitoring the water levels and have assured the public that further updates will be issued as necessary.
