Energy leaders converge in London for Africa Energies Summit

Energy leaders from across the globe have gathered in London for the Africa Energies Summit, hosted by the Frontier Energy Network. The three-day event, running until Thursday, 15 May, brings together industry experts, government representatives, and key stakeholders to discuss the future of energy in Africa, focusing on market opportunities, the energy transition, and technological advancements in the oil and gas sector.

Shakwa Nyambe, an energy lawyer from SNC Incorporated, is among the attendees. Speaking from the summit, Nyambe stressed the event’s significance. “Yes, this is a very important and relevant conference, especially for Africa and Namibia in particular,” he said.

“The agenda is built around six key themes, offering attendees the opportunity to engage with Africa’s top energy experts and leaders through various talks and speeches.”

The summit’s agenda, crafted around six themes, aims to provide comprehensive insights into Africa’s energy landscape. The first theme, Market Opportunities and Challenges, explores the evolving oil and gas sector, focusing on emerging markets and the hurdles faced by the industry. The second theme, Exploration and Production, dives into the latest advancements across Africa’s oil fields.

The third theme, Upstream Finance and Investment, addresses the financial frameworks crucial for driving Africa’s upstream oil and gas activities. According to Nyambe, “Financing and investment are critical for Africa’s oil and gas sector, ensuring sustainable growth and development.”

Policy, governance, and market stability make up the fourth theme, focusing on regulatory frameworks and government-industry collaboration to foster stability. The fifth theme covers the Energy Transition and Carbon Reduction, highlighting how Africa is navigating global energy demands while reducing its carbon footprint. Lastly, the summit will discuss Technology and Development, examining the transformative role of digitalization and advanced techniques in oil and gas operations.

Namibia is presenting at the summit, showcasing its growing energy sector with a focus on becoming a regional energy hub. Key areas of emphasis will include potential energy hubs, in-country value creation, and the emerging interest in the Orange Basin for oil exploration. The country is also expected to engage in discussions around regional infrastructure integration and the development of localised supply chains.

Namibia’s recent oil discoveries in the Orange Basin are likely to be highlighted as a testament to the country’s potential as a frontier exploration hotspot. Additionally, the country plans to emphasise its commitment to local content and skills training, showcasing how resource development can spur economic growth.

As Namibia positions itself as a leading energy hub, the summit will serve as a platform to discuss strategic collaboration and energy initiatives. Namibia’s renewable energy potential, including wind and solar resources, is also expected to be showcased, aligning with the country’s broader energy strategy.
