Background

PRETORIA, South Africa – The GOOD Party in South Africa has criticised the United States and other global powers for selectively applying international law based on strategic interests. “They have a moral and legal obligation to uphold international law—not cherry‑pick when it suits them,” said party secretary-general Brett Herron.

Herron’s remarks come amid escalating conflict in the Middle East after U.S. strikes targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities. He echoed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s plea for an immediate ceasefire, emphasizing the need for consistency in international justice.

In New York, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Shea issued a stern warning: “Any Iranian attack against American citizens or bases will be met with devastating retaliation.”

Meanwhile, China strongly condemned the U.S. air strikes, accusing Washington of damaging its global credibility and violating international law. China, joined by Russia and Pakistan, pressed the UN Security Council to adopt an immediate ceasefire resolution. “The use of force must be restrained … dialogue must reign supreme,” said China’s UN envoy Fu Cong.
