The death toll from the devastating floods in South Africa’s Eastern Cape has risen to 95, as search and recovery operations continue across hard-hit districts. Provincial spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie confirmed that 95 bodies have been recovered, with 86 identified and claimed by families.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has joined provincial search teams, with additional support deployed from the North West government, bringing the total number of active recovery units to four.

Rantjie praised the coordinated efforts of government bodies and NGOs, saying the collaboration “has been extremely helpful” in delivering humanitarian aid, providing burial support, and helping families with identification processes.

Triggered by an intense cold front on 9 June , torrential rains, strong winds, and snow burst rivers and inundated informal settlements, primarily affecting areas like Mthatha and OR Tambo, and the Amathole districts. By 11 June , the toll stood at 49, but as floodwaters subsided and search teams accessed remote areas, the figure climbed sharply, first to 86 and now to 95.

The Associated Press reports that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a national state of disaster, unlocking emergency funding and support for relief and rebuilding efforts.
