Gauteng faces growing crisis of gang violence

today8 July, 2025

Background

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has sounded the alarm over an escalating gang violence and illegal firearms crisis in Gauteng, with more than 15 gang-related attacks reported across Westbury, Eldorado Park, Orange Farm, and Johannesburg South since September 2024. DA spokesperson Michael Sun condemned Premier Panyaza Lesufi, accusing him of failing to take meaningful action against the violence.

Areas such as Westbury and Eldorado Park have witnessed deadly turf wars involving gangs like the Varados and Fast Guns. These conflicts, fueled by drug distribution and control of territory, have led to shootings—some targeting children and teachers—as well as a spike in violent crime.

The Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) has stepped up enforcement, making 137 arrests from January to May 2025—including for firearm offences—yet illegal weapons continue to arm increasingly younger gang members.

Michael Sun slammed Premier Lesufi’s response as delayed and inadequate, calling for immediate deployment of specialised police units and additional SAPS resources in hotspot zones. The DA demands transparent crime-fighting strategies and community involvement.
