Netanyahu nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

today8 July, 2025

Background

Washington, D.C. — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has officially nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize during their White House meeting on 7 July. Netanyahu presented a letter supporting the nomination, citing Trump’s “pivotal role” in brokering diplomatic advances, including the normalization of relations between Israel and several Arab nations.

The announcement came as both leaders met amidst high-stakes negotiations to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. Israeli officials caution that, while progress has been made, “obstacles remain” in ongoing discussions facilitated in Qatar by mediators from Egypt and Qatar. President Trump expressed optimism, suggesting Hamas had responded positively to the proposal and noting continued efforts involving his envoy, Steve Witkoff.

Netanyahu, who is a valid nominator under Nobel committee rules, handed the nomination letter to Trump during an official White House dinner. Deutsche Welle reports that the Nobel nomination underscores close coordination between Israel and the U.S., not just on ceasefire efforts but also the recent military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Despite some headway, Reuters reports that the main issues remain unresolved. This marks one of Trump’s most serious peace initiatives since leaving office—his consistent involvement in Middle East diplomacy, including backing for a proposed 60-day Gaza truce.
