Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes re-elected to Sub‑Saharan Mayors Forum

today8 July, 2025

Background

Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes of Walvis Bay has been re‑elected to represent the city and fellow signatories on the Covenant of Mayors in Sub‑Saharan Africa Regional Mayors Forum (CoM SSA). Forbes, who has led the port town since November 2020 and secured a second term in November 2024, will continue to influence regional sustainable development strategies across sub‑Saharan Africa.

As a CoM SSA Forum member, Forbes joins other municipal leaders in steering urban climate resilience, sustainable energy adoption, and cross-border infrastructure projects. He previously participated in COP28 side events around climate finance and local-level climate adaptation.

Forbes’s third term as mayor underscores strong local backing. His achievements include launching a youth climate fund, improving sanitation systems, and initiating the first Maritime Festival in Walvis Bay.

The CoM SSA Regional Mayors Forum is a platform for municipal leaders to collaborate on climate adaptation and access international funding. In 2023, the forum met with EU representatives at COP28 to strengthen climate integration in urban projects. The group also advocates for the inclusion of local perspectives in national climate commitments through its engagement with the global Covenant of Mayors.
