Contractors urged to consult communities in Oshikoto road projects

OMUTHIYA – 16 July 2025 – Oshikoto Regional Governor Sacky Kathindi has issued a strong warning to road contractors working in the region: consult with local communities and business owners before removing structures or proceeding with construction.

During an inspection of the troubled Engoyi–Omuntele gravel road project—initially launched in October 2023—Governor Kathindi flagged widespread delays and poor coordination among stakeholders. He emphasised that local councillors and businesses must be engaged at every stage to prevent conflict and project setbacks. The contract, awarded to the Roads Contractor Company (RCC), had been due for completion in six to twelve months but has dragged on due to water supply issues, delayed plans, and unplanned extra work.

The incident reveals the larger infrastructure challenge in the region, where more than 85% of roads remain unpaved or deteriorating, hindering access to essential services and economic opportunities. Roads in constituencies like Okankolo and Nehale Lyampingana have not been upgraded for over two decades.

Kathindi’s call aligns with broader regional policy: recent projects such as the Omuthiya–Elambo gravel road (54 km) are explicitly designed as labour-based and community-inclusive, with predicted completion in two years. Local leaders were actively involved from the planning phase to ensure minimal disruption and maximum benefit for residents.
