Digital safety expert Nrupesh Soni has sounded the alarm on increasing dangers facing children on WhatsApp, especially through the platform’s new unregulated channels. These channels, which lack moderation or rating systems, are flooding with adult content, gambling links, and child exploitation material. Shockingly, kids as young as 10 years old are being exposed to these risks.
Soni explained that popular online games like Roblox and Minecraft are being used to share WhatsApp channel links, which lure children into harmful online spaces. “Parents often allow kids to use WhatsApp to stay connected, but with the explosion of channels, it’s a very different environment,” he said.
Unlike the old WhatsApp messenger, which was relatively safe, the new channels feature allows anyone—including children—to join any channel without restrictions. This has opened the door to inappropriate content and illegal links. Even if harmful channels are shut down, new ones quickly take their place, making it difficult to protect young users.
To combat these threats, Soni urges parents to:
Monitor their children’s WhatsApp activity closely
Check who they are chatting with and what content they access
Be aware of suspicious links or invitations from games
He also calls on schools to implement stricter digital policies that prevent misuse of devices and messaging platforms on campus.
While platforms like WhatsApp offer valuable communication tools, experts warn they also pose serious risks if not properly managed. It’s vital that parents, educators, and guardians stay informed and proactive to safeguard children’s online experiences.
