Walvis Bay Child and Family Center plans new facility

Walvis Bay mayor Trevino Forbes on Monday visited the Walvis Bay Child and Family Center, where he acknowledged a title deed donation of four erven to the center by the municipality of Walvis Bay.

The donation will pave the way for the construction of a new centre in the Meersig suburb, with improved facilities that will more effectively support education, therapy, training, livelihood development and psychosocial interventions for children and young people with disabilities.

The non-governmental organisation has been operating from a premises that belong to the ministry of health since 1996.

The mayor, who complimented the staff for the operations of the center, called on the Walvis Bay community to render their support by occasionally visiting the center and helping where needed.

“I applaud the staff for their love and passion in taking care of our vulnerable children. I appeal to the community to provide support through skills training, especially as the center has woodwork and gardening programs.

The center also has a kitchen where its youth cook good food. Support them with their catering, especially when having events. We especially call upon the local community and business sector to come on board as they require a lot of support to build a center that will be able to accommodate more children with disabilities,” he said.

The center daily houses 107 children and youth with disabilities, as well as 18 protected workers with moderate to severe disabilities.
