today30 July, 2025

Background

A 24-year-old Namibian man was arrested early on 30 July at a residence on Miems Street, Khomasdal, after police intelligence revealed 18 parcels of compressed cannabis weighing over 18.5 kilograms. The drugs, with a street value estimated at N$929,000, were confiscated during the intelligence-led operation. The suspect now faces charges under the Abuse of Dependence-Producing Substances Act as investigations continue, police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed.

The arrest forms part of a wider crackdown on drug trafficking trends in Namibia. In July alone, NamPol reported the seizure of nearly 745 tonnes of cannabis, with 130 suspects arrested, including both Namibian nationals and foreign citizens across the Southern Africa region. That followed the discovery in June of over 696 kg of cannabis, dozens of mandrax tablets, and grams of cocaine and crack, resulting in more than 130 arrests.
