President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that intensive negotiations are underway with the United States, as South Africa seeks tariff exemptions on key exports such as vehicles, steel, aluminium, and citrus. Speaking at the Union Buildings, Ramaphosa said Pretoria has presented a comprehensive trade package aimed at mutual investment and economic cooperation.

Reuters reports that South Africa is facing a looming 30% U.S. tariff on several export sectors starting in early August, threatening industries ranging from automotive to agriculture. The government has responded with proactive measures such as establishing an Export Support Desk and financial aid packages to support affected businesses and preserve jobs. Ramaphosa emphasized the urgency of settling within the remaining negotiation window.

According to The Citizen, the proposed tariffs jeopardize up to 35,000 jobs in South Africa’s citrus industry alone and could deal a broader blow to the country’s industrial and agricultural sectors.

During Ramaphosa’s May visit to the White House, South Africa offered to purchase U.S. liquefied natural gas over ten years as part of a larger package that includes duty-free quotas for specific exports.
