UN chief alarmed by worsening conditions in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has described the unfolding crisis in Sudan as a “catastrophe of staggering scale and brutality,” with more than 12.4 million people displaced by armed conflict between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). His deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, relayed the comments during a UN press briefing.

Haq highlighted the escalating humanitarian emergency in Darfur and Khartoum, with widespread famine, cholera outbreaks, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure fueling mass displacement. Famine has already been confirmed in multiple IDP camps, and South Darfur is increasingly inaccessible to aid groups due to ongoing violence.

Guterres has urged all parties to abide by international humanitarian law, calling for safe passage for civilians, unhindered access for humanitarian convoys, and an immediate ceasefire followed by renewed political dialogue. Beyond, marking one of the world’s largest displacement crises.

Conflict-related obstruction of food, water, and medical aid has caused famine in Darfur and worsened public health crises. The UN insists the only long-term solution lies in mediation and adherence to humanitarian principles, while stopping violence immediately.
