South African Minister to meet SANDF chief over Iran comments

South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, is expected to meet with South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya, to clarify remarks he made during a visit to Iran. Lamola had praised cooperation with Iran in addressing what he termed “global arrogance and aggressive colonial approaches,” comments that have sparked debate at home and abroad.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) emphasized that the implementation of South Africa’s foreign policy is the prerogative of the Presidency. DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said, “While Minister Lamola’s statements have attracted attention, it is important to note that foreign policy is coordinated through the office of the President. We expect the upcoming discussion with SANDF leadership to provide clarity on these remarks.”

Political analysts suggest that the meeting may also aim to reassure international partners that South Africa remains committed to diplomatic neutrality and multilateral engagement. Observers note that the remarks could have implications for South Africa’s relations within the African Union and its position on global security matters.
