The European Union has banned gel nail polishes containing a chemical compound linked to cancer and fertility problems, ordering salons across the bloc to pull products from their shelves.
According to CNN, the chemical, known as TPO, is widely used in nail products to harden polish under UV light. Regulators concluded that exposure to TPO carries significant long-term health risks, prompting an immediate ban.
Under the new rules, salons must stop using existing stock while manufacturers work on developing safer alternatives. EU officials said the decision reflects broader efforts to strengthen consumer protections, particularly in the beauty and cosmetics industry.
The Daily Mail reports that the ban is expected to ripple through the beauty sector, where gel manicures have become a staple service. Industry groups warned of short-term disruptions but acknowledged that public health concerns make the restrictions unavoidable.
Consumer advocates welcomed the move, saying it highlights the importance of stricter oversight in the cosmetics market.
