U.S. retail giant Walmart to launch in South Africa

US retail giant Walmart will open its first branded stores in South Africa, expanding its footprint on the continent. The announcement comes after Walmart’s recent Growth Summit, which recruited Africa-based suppliers and strengthened local sourcing.

Massmart CEO Miles van Rensburg said the move will combine Walmart’s promise of everyday low prices with support for South African suppliers. He said that the partnership will create new opportunities for local businesses to access larger markets and scale production.

Industry analysts are of the opinion that Walmart’s entry could intensify competition in the South African retail sector, prompting existing chains to adjust pricing and sourcing strategies.
