More than 20 Namibians have reportedly been arrested in Angola while refuelling their cars. The motorists were detained in Ondjiva and Santa Clara, and several vehicles were seized.

A petition sent to Angolan authorities accuses the police of abuse of power and calls for the release of those detained.

Former diplomat, Ambassador Pius Dunaiski, said the arrests reflect wider socio-economic challenges in southern Angola and the ongoing issue of cross-border fuel smuggling.

“Namibia lost maybe N$350 million last year in income from fuel smuggling. The situation is growing out of control, and I think we as a country must seriously address the issue.”

He added that the matter should be raised with the Ministry of International Cooperation and Trade, stressing the need for joint efforts between Namibia and Angola to balance enforcement with protecting citizens.
