Etosha wildfires: Authorities warn risk remains

today30 September, 2025

Background

Wildfires that destroyed large areas of Etosha National Park and surrounding regions have been reported as contained by government officials, though some experts dispute that assessment. Sheriff Sean Naude of the Marshal Rangers cautioned that the fires are far from over, with hot spots still capable of flaring up if strong winds return.

The blaze, which broke out on 22 September, has destroyed nearly a third of the park despite days of firefighting efforts involving volunteers, soldiers, and helicopters. While some areas are now under control, the fire has also spread into nearby settlements, causing ongoing damage.

Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge said local personnel remain on site to monitor potential flare-ups and assist firefighters in affected areas. “Control is down, but the human resources are still there, managing any emergency to act quickly,” he said. He added that parts of Omsati, particularly Okahao and Otamazi, were completely destroyed, while other areas, such as Oshana, have been brought under control.

Authorities continue mop-up and monitoring operations, warning residents and visitors to exercise caution as risks remain.
