U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Israel on Monday, declaring that the war in Gaza “is over” after Hamas released the first group of Israeli hostages under a ceasefire agreement brokered by Washington.

Under the deal, Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of 20 surviving hostages held in Gaza. The agreement is a diplomatic breakthrough after months of intense fighting that have devastated the enclave and strained international relations.

Speaking in Jerusalem, Trump called the ceasefire “a turning point” and said the U.S. remains committed to supporting Israel’s security while promoting long-term peace in the region.

Former Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, said she was “cautiously optimistic” about the truce, noting that the release of hostages offers hope but warning that deep mistrust remains between the two sides.

The truce, negotiated with support from Egypt and Qatar, is expected to allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza, where thousands remain displaced. However, analysts warn that the fragile calm could collapse if either side violates the terms of the agreement.
