Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma has declared victory in Cameroon’s presidential election held on October 12, calling on long-serving President Paul Biya to accept defeat and “honour the truth of the ballot box.”

Tchiroma’s declaration came late Monday amid mounting anticipation over the official outcome of the vote. The election marks one of the most closely watched contests in recent years in Cameroon, where Biya, 91, has ruled since 1982.

According to Reuters, Cameroon’s electoral law permits provisional results to be posted at individual polling stations. However, only the Constitutional Council has the authority to validate and proclaim final results — a process that must be completed by October 26.

Observers say the council’s announcement will be crucial in determining whether the election ushers in political change or extends Biya’s four-decade hold on power.
