IPPR: 2024 Elections show politics growing more competitive

The latest post-election analysis by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has revealed that Namibia’s political landscape is becoming increasingly competitive. The report, Fraying Dominance, Fragmented Opposition: Inside the Numbers of the 2024 Election, expands on changes in voter behaviour and party strongholds.

Using constituency-level data, the paper traces three trends: urban centres are turning into political battlegrounds, the South is consolidating as opposition territory, and cracks are emerging in the ruling party’s northern region. These developments signal that the country is entering a more competitive era.

However, the report notes that opposition fragmentation could prevent a power shift despite these changes, meaning the ruling party may retain influence even as its dominance weakens.

IPPR Research Associate Max Weylandt said, “The data suggests that voters are increasingly evaluating parties beyond historical loyalties, which has important implications for future elections.”

The report is a useful tool for both the opportunities for opposition parties and the need for the ruling party to address emerging vulnerabilities.
