Integrate mental health literacy in schools says IPC

today4 November, 2025

Background

By: Selma Taapopi

The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) proposes that the newly tabled Mental Health Bill should include provisions to integrate mental health literacy in the school curriculum, from primary level.

IPC shadow health minister, Lilani Brinkman, stressed the importance of training teachers and community leaders to identify early mental distress signs and make appropriate referrals.

Brinkman also called for the expansion of parenting programmes that promote emotional regulation and healthy communication.

She noted the need for financial support towards local wellness clubs offering peer support, recreational activities, and stress management workshops. The proposal further encourages the establishment of youth clubs and mentorship initiatives aimed at strengthening resilience and fostering social connections among young people.
