Zambia is hosting Chinese Premier Li Qiang for the first time in 28 years, a landmark visit launched amid Lusaka’s post‑crisis economic recovery.

China remains Zambia’s largest official creditor, with Lusaka owing about US$5.7 billion, Reuters reports. Reuters reports that Beijing’s push is part of a broader strategy to reinforce its Belt and Road cooperation, positioning Zambia as a model partner.

During the November 19–20 visit, Li is expected to hold talks with President Hakainde Hichilema on strengthening cooperation in trade, mining, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and technology.  China and Zambia will also review progress on the TAZARA railway revitalisation project and explore new collaboration opportunities under the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation.
