A massive fire engulfed a high-rise apartment building in Hong Kong on Wednesday, killing at least 55 people and leaving nearly 300 residents missing, officials confirmed. Firefighters have struggled to reach the upper floors, with smoke and debris making rescue operations increasingly difficult. Local media, including the South China Morning Post and RTHK, reported that residents were trapped as flames spread rapidly through the tower.

Authorities have pointed to unsafe renovation materials, including bamboo scaffolding, as a likely factor in the fire’s rapid escalation. Police have arrested three construction managers on suspicion of manslaughter, citing potential negligence in adhering to safety regulations. Experts say the incident raises serious concerns about building oversight and emergency preparedness in densely populated urban areas.

Laura Westbrook, reporting from the scene for local outlets, described chaotic rescue efforts and community grief, with relatives waiting anxiously outside the building for news of missing family members. Hong Kong officials have vowed a full investigation and immediate review of construction and renovation safety practices to prevent future tragedies.
