Bank of Namibia calls for inclusive resilience strategies on climate

today26 January, 2026

Bank of Namibia Governor, Ebson Uanguta, has warned that climate change impacts and emerging financial risks pose a growing threat to Namibia’s economic stability.

Uanguta made the remarks during an environmental stewardship and gender mainstreaming for state resilience meeting, convened by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

Uanguta also called for coordinated national action to strengthen resilience against these risks.

He noted the impact of environmental sustainability for long-term economic growth adding that the theme aligned directly with NDP6 objectives.

He said the theme of the engagement aligns directly with Namibia’s national development agenda and the recently launched Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), noting that environmental sustainability is a prerequisite for long-term economic growth.

“Namibia, like many countries globally, is facing increasing environmental and climate-related challenges,” Uanguta said, adding that the frequency and intensity of shocks now require governments to rethink disaster management and recovery frameworks.

He noted that the global environment has entered a period of profound change marked by uncertainty, technological disruption and shifting economic systems.

“The world order as we knew it has shifted. This requires that our mindset and the way we operate must also change if we are to succeed,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare urged stakeholders to ensure that policy discussions translate into tangible action.

“We do not want reports to gather dust. We want implementation,” Ngurare said, calling for stronger coordination across sectors.

He emphasised the importance of collaboration in building a resilient Namibia, urging institutions to work together in addressing disasters, infrastructure challenges and technological transformation.
