The Gordon family from Walvis Bay were in tears on Wednesday as they witnessed a street at the Wakuna residential area of Kuisebmond being named after their brother and son Carlo Gordon.

Captain Carlo Gordon died six years ago in the line of duty after the fishing trawler that he was on, sank in 2020 near Henties Bay.Twenty-six crew members were rescued because of his bravery and instructions, while his remains were not recovered.

The naming ceremony was made possible after Wakuna Investment approached the municipality with the suggestion of honoring him.

Hileni Lucas from Wakuna Investment noted that Gordon demonstrated extraordinary courage when he ensured the safety of his crew during the incident.

“His actions reflected the core values of responsibility and selflessness. Naming a street after him would not only commemorate his heroic conduct but would also serve as a lasting symbol of integrity and courage for our community and future generations. Walvis Bay, being a coastal town with a proud maritime heritage, holds deep respect for those who dedicate their lives to the sea,” she said.

Captain Gordon’s brother, Ryan, noted on behalf of the family that the street will be a valuable connection between the family and their lost brother and son.

“We lost a brother and son, but gained a street. At least our brother is honored. There is something that we can connect to. It shows that there was once a Carlo Gordon who laid down his life. I do not know how to say thank you,” he said.

Captain Carlo Gordon was 48 years old when the incident occurred.
