Mass food poisoning scare hits Rundu Secondary School hostel

today17 March, 2026

Background

By: Staff Reporter

A total of 283 hostel learners at Rundu Secondary School are showing symptoms of suspected food poisoning after consuming bread and polony during dinner in the hostel hall Monday night in Kavango East Region.

On Tuesday morning, 15 learners were rushed to the Rundu Intermediate Hospital after developing severe diarrhoea.

According to hostel superintendent, Samuel Marungu, the situation unfolded when a large number of learners began complaining about stomach problems, prompting urgent medical intervention.

Those with severe symptoms were immediately transported to hospital, while a team of nurses was dispatched to the hostel to assess and assist the remaining learners.

Marungu further indicated that a town-wide power outage on Sunday may have affected the school’s food storage, raising concerns that the food could have been compromised.
