Namibian Police Tourism Protection Sub-Division has recovered luggage belonging to two Zambian delegation currently visiting Namibia for a conference.

The items were stolen while the visitors had briefly stopped at an accommodation facility to inquire about lodging.

The division’s head, Chief Inspector Christina van Dunem DaFonsech-Shikongo, confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft.

She said a 30-year-old man was apprehended in Windhoek’s Goreangab informal settlement and was found in possession of one suitcase.

She stated that a second suspect, a 40-year-old man, was arrested in Otjomuise, also in possession of a suitable.

She said a laptop remains missing; however, police have identified the individual to whom it was allegedly sold.

DaFonsech-Shikongo added that the 40-year-old suspect allegedly revealed that he had been contacted by an Otjomuise-based businessman, Shapaka Matheus, who had invited 25-year-old Beatus Iiyambo, also known as “Tuna,” from the Omusati Region for work.

The suspect stated that he and Matheus later went to search for Iiyambo at Goreangab Dam after he reportedly went missing.

Furthermore, DaFonsech-Shikongo said that since the unit resumed operations on 10 February this year, a total of 12 suspects have been arrested for crimes targeting tourists. These include robbery, theft from motor vehicles, and theft under false pretences, among other offences. Of the 12 suspects, 10 have been denied bail, while two have been granted bail.

She cautioned tourists to exercise vigilance when seeking accommodation, warning against unverified establishments, as criminals are offering bogus accommodation and transport services.
